Volleyball Opens 2012 with Two Wins at Home Classic

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. ( – The UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team kicked off 2012 with a pair of victories on the first day of the UW-Eau Claire Labor Day Classic in the McPhee Physical Education Center.

The Blugolds opened the day with a 3-0 victory over the Wildcats with scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-18. In that match, the Blugolds recorded 49 kills to 31 for St. Catherine and outhit the Wildcats .311 to .227.

Anne Satterlee (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) led three Blugolds who reached double-digits in kills with 16 while Kelly Schuh (Jr.-Appleton, Wis./Hortonville) and Amy Bomgren (Sr.-Woodbury, Minn.) recorded 10 apiece. Emily Neave (Sr.-Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) finished with a match-high 38 set assists and 13 digs.

In the second match against the Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.), the Blugolds came out strong in the first set with a 25-14 victory and followed with a 25-23 win. However, the Cobbers fought back in the third and fourth sets and won them both 25-22.

In the final set, it was a back-and-forth fight the entire way but the Blugolds were able hang on to secure the 15-12 set win and the 3-2 match victory.

With three Blugolds again in double-figures in kills, it was Bomgren who led this time with a match-high 24, just five short of a school record. Satterlee finished with 22 and Carly Kempton (So.-Pewaukee, Wis.) had 10. Eau Claire finished with a total of 68 while the Cobbers had 51.

Lauren Sutherland (Jr.-Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) finished with a match-high 34 digs while four other Blugolds each had 10 or more. Neave also led the match with 58 set assists.

With the two victories, the Blugolds increased their home winning streak to nine straight, tied for the eighth longest in school history. The streak began on Sept. 6, 2011.

Saturday, the Blugolds will compete two more times to wrap up the classic. They will face Martin Luther College (Minn.) at 10 a.m. and will end the day against the College of St. Benedict (Minn.) at 2:30 p.m.
