Wrestlers finish 2-2 at NWCA National Duals

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Blugolds.com) – In their debut at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Divisional National Duals, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team finished 2-2 with wins over WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) and Centenary and fell to nationally ranked Wartburg College and Baldwin Wallace.

In their opening matchup in the invitation-only tournament, the Blugolds defeated WPI in the first round with a 31-8 score. Jake Drexler (Fr. – Stratford, WI), Toby Mosley (Sr. – Sparta, WI) and Austen Hakes (So. – River Falls, WI) all recorded pins while David Dudych (So. - West Dundee, IL/Harry D. Jacobs) won by major decision (13-5). Jack Marley (Fr. – Trempealeau, WI/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau), Thomas Severson (Fr. – Marathon, WI/D.C. Everest) and Chase Schmidt (So. – Rice Lake, WI) also won by decision.

In the second round against No. 2-ranked Wartburg, the Blugolds fell 34-6. Drexler tallied the lone Eau Claire win in the match by defeating Wartburg's Brenden Baker by fall (1:52).

Eau Claire earned a 28-13 win in the third round against Centenary with Jordan Blanchard (Fr. – Coleman, WI) tallying the only pin for the Blugolds. Marley, Severson, Drexler and Dudych recorded wins by major decision while Hakes also received a win due to an injury (5:00).

Facing No. 8-ranked Baldwin Wallace in the fourth round, Eau Claire fell to the Yellowjackets by a score of 42-3. Mosley earned a win at 174, defeating Adam Green by decision, 8-5.

In addition, two Blugolds placed in the open tournament. Evan Lawrence (So. Hugo, MN/Mahtomedi) finished in sixth place with a 5-1 record at 174 pounds while Grant Balconi (Jr. - Muskego, WI) was third with a 4-1 record at 184.

The next tournament for the Blugolds will be the Budd Whitehill Duals on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12 in Williamsport, PA and will be hosted by Lycoming College.
