EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team hosted No. 4 Adrian College at Hobbs Ice Arena Monday afternoon, defeating the Bulldogs 3-2.
The Blugolds drew first blood as Erin Goodell (Jr. – Maplewood, MN/Woodbury) scored her first goal of the season off a Lexi Wilson (Jr. – Eagan, MN) assist nearly nine minutes into the game. Eau Claire would take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The Blugolds out-shot Adrian 8-3 in the period.
Adrian would take advantage of an early power play in the second period to tie it up at one but Holly Turnbull (Jr. – Hayward, WI) would give Eau Claire the lead once again, scoring a power play goal two minutes later. Sami Meister (So. – Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) and Elizabeth Bauer (So. – Wausau, WI/East) would earn assists on the goal.
The Bulldogs tied it up once again later in the period, as Adrian's Rose Krasofsky scored with just 19 seconds left. Eau Claire would again out-shoot the Blugolds for the period, this time 15-7.
The third period was a hard-fought battle with both teams getting nine shots on goal. Overtime seems apparent until a late rush by the Blugolds. With just ten seconds remaining, Bauer went top shelf to beat Adrian goaltender Kate Turner for the game-winning goal. Courtney Wittig (Jr. – Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) and Hanna Zavoral (Fr. – St. Paul, MN/Highland Park) were credited assists on the goal.
For the game, the Blugolds out-shot the Bulldogs 32-19 while Adrian won the face-off battle 34-23.
Sophomore goaltender Erin Connolly (Mequon, WI/Homestead) improves to 9-4-2 on the season with 17 saves.
The Blugolds improve to 11-5-2 on the season as the enter Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. Eau Claire will travel to UW-Superior on Friday to take on the Yellowjackets and will play host the following evening. Both games are slated for 7 p.m. Follow all the action on Blugold Game Day.
