EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com)-The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire softball team split their final doubleheader of the regular season Tuesday night against College of Saint Benedict (MN).
The Blugolds opened up the first game of the night gaining an early lead in the third inning. Jessica Heffel (Racine, WI/ Case) had a huge triple to get the offense going and was hit in by Haley Robinson (Fr.-Hoffman Estates, IL/St.Viator) to go up one. Robinson was able to score off an error at second base on a hit from Katie Rongstad (Jr.-Slinger, WI).
Mikayla McEnery (So.-Savage, MN/Prior Lake) would knock in Heffel in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly. Eau Claire shut down CSB the rest of the way, ending up with a 3-0 victory.
The Blugolds were great on the mound, Cheyenne Johnson (Jr.-Poplar, WI/Northwestern) had four scoreless innings and earned a win, improving her to 7-3 on the season. Stephanie Wilczynski (Naperville, Il /Waubonsie Valley) had three scoreless innings in relief.
The Blugolds were not able to keep up the momentum in the second game of the night. CSB jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of first. A single from Abbey Place (So.-Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) that scored McEnery made it 2-1. The Bennies would explode offensively in the second and sixth innings, adding eight more runs in total. They would end the game on top, with a final score of 10-1.
Eau Claire had just two hits total in the game, but once again showed a great eye at the plate, as they drew three walks.
The Blugolds are now done with their regular season, with a 24-9-1 overall record and 9-4-1 conference record. They will begin Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament as the two seed, squaring off against UW-Platteville. It will be Friday at noon on the campus of UW-Whitewater.
