Women's Outdoor Track & Field Takes Third at WIAC Championship
WHITEWATER, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's outdoor track & field team finished in third place out of nine teams at the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championship, hosted by UW-Whitewater.
After the two-day championship, the Blugolds scored 129.5 points to claim third while UW-La Crosse won the team title for the fifth time in the past six years, finishing with 185 points. UW-Oshkosh was second with 176.
The Blugolds won one conference title while recording a total of 11 top-three finishes.
Julia Baranek (Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) won the triple jump conference crown with a mark of 12.07 meters (39-7.25), a school and facility record, along with the best distance in the conference this season. The previous school record was 11.84 meters (38-10.25) set on May 7, 2005.
Eau Claire had three second place finishes.
In the field, Brittany Frederick (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./Preble) was second in the discus throw with a distance of 45.71 meters (150-0). On the track, Steph Sjostrom (Jr.-Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) finished as the runner-up in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:40.92 while Kacey Rindy (Sr.-Fennimore, Wis.) was second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 38:28.07.
The Blugolds also came away with seven third place finishes.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Lindsey Laufenberg (Fr.-Waunakee, Wis.), Talisa Emberts (Sr.-Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton), Megan Mulligan (Fr.-Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) and Jordanne Greenup (Sr.-Fridley, Minn.) set a school record with a time of 47.47 seconds. The previous school best was 47.68 seconds set on May 7, 2011.
In the field, Julia Baranek was third in the long jump with a distance of 5.48 meters (17-11.75) and Frederick took third in the hammer throw with a mark of 51.85 meters (170-1).
On the track, Emberts finished the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.12 seconds for third place while Erin Schoenfelder (Jr.-Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) was third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.11. Also third was Alyssa Sybilrud (Jr.-Savage, Minn./Burnsville) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:21.14.
Michelle Baranek (Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) was third in the heptathlon with 4,416 points.
Over the next two weeks, the Blugolds will compete at last chance meets, beginning with the North Central Last Chance May 10-11.
