Women's Tennis Opens Spring Break with Win

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team kicked off its spring portion of the season and its spring break trip with a 7-2 win over Elmhurst College (Ill.) today.

The Blugolds lost just once in singles play and once on the doubles side.

Gretchen Bachmeier (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) led the singles players as she lost just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 spot.

Lexi DeMario (Fr.-Verona, Wis./Verona Area) and Mary Frassetto (Fr.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) also won convincingly, taking the No. 4 and No. 5 spots with scores of 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively.

At No. 2 singles, Katie Gillman (Fr.-Red Wing, Minn.) won 6-3, 6-4 while Stephanie Wolf (Fr.-Verona, Wis./Verona Area) won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 6.

In doubles play, Taylor Heltne (So.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Gillman won 8-3 in the No. 1 spot and Stephanie Wolf (Fr.-Verona, Wis./Verona Area) and Emily Hiebl (Jr.-Wausau, Wis./East) won 8-1 at No. 3.

The Blugolds improve to 7-4 on the season in dual competitions.

Tomorrow the Blugolds will face the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.).
