EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) — The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team welcomed Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) to Bollinger Field Saturday afternoon for their second home game of the season. The Blugolds could not have asked for a better start, but it was Concordia-Moorhead who came out on top with the 2-1 victory.
Just 27 seconds into the game, Jackie Nailor (Fr.-Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) buried a shot from the left side of the field on a nice pass from Fallon Peplinski (Fr.-Appleton, Wis./Xavier) to put the Blugolds (2-1-2) up 1-0.
The Cobbers (3-2-0) answered in the 33rd minute with an unassisted goal. Just a few minutes later, at the 36th minute, they scored again to take their first lead of the game.
Both teams had goals called off in the first half because they were offside. The first half ended with Concordia-Moorhead holding the 2-1 advantage. The Blugolds were outshot 12-5 in the first half.
Each team was aggressive in a somewhat physical half of play, but neither team was able to break through early. As the game wore on, the Cobbers became more defensive and they were able to hold on to the one-goal lead.
Concordia-Moorhead had seven corner kicks to just one for the Blugolds. Nina Behrenbrinker (Sr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) made eight saves in goal, including several key saves to keep the Blugolds within striking distance.
It was the first loss of the season for UW-Eau Claire, who will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 18 when they travel to Wartburg, Iowa. They will open conference play next Saturday, Sept. 21 when they welcome UW-La Crosse to Bollinger Field.
