Mike Greer Selected to Lead Blugold Women's Golf Program
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Following the resignation of Meghan Sobotta at the end of May, UW-Eau Claire men's golf head coach Mike Greer has been selected as the next women's golf head coach, Director of Athletics Dan Schumacher announced today.
"Mike has done an exceptional job leading the men's golf team for the past two years, and the experience he has gained will allow him to effectively coach both teams at a high level," Schumacher said.
Greer has been the men's golf head coach since the spring of 2012 and will become the fifth head coach in the history of the women's golf team. This is the second time in program history one person will coach both the men's and women's teams with the last time being in the fall of 2003.
"I am honored to be named the Blugold Women's Golf coach," Greer said. "The women's golf team is a talented and dedicated group of student-athletes that will be defending the WIAC Championship this fall. I am fortunate to be their leader. I am excited to continue to build on the great foundation that Coach Sobotta has developed and would also like thank Athletic Director Dan Schumacher for the opportunity to head both the women's and men's golf programs."
In 13 of the past 14 seasons, the women's golf team has finished tied for 13th place or better at nationals, including three third-place finishes in 2005, 2010 and 2012. At the 2012 NCAA Championship, Catherine Wagner became the first person in program history to win an individual national title. They have also won four of the past five WIAC Championships for a total of nine titles in program history.
With Greer coaching the men's golf team, two Blugolds have earned Golf Coaches Association of America All-Region honors while another was named to the All-Freshman team last season, just one of six freshmen in the nation to be selected to the team. He has served on the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Central Region Advisory Committee for the past two years.
Greer was a four-time letterwinner for the Blugolds from 2003-04 to 2006-07. He earned All-American honorable mention recognition in 2004. Greer was also named to the PING All-Central Region Team in 2007 and earned Co-Most Valuable Golfer honors for the team that season.
