Softball Drops Two at 13th-Ranked Illinois Wesleyan
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (Blugolds.com) – Despite leading in both games of a doubleheader at 13th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University, the UW-Eau Claire softball team couldn't maintain the lead and fell twice, dropping game one 4-1 while losing game two 5-4.
Eau Claire, which was originally scheduled to play Illinois Wesleyan once and Washington (Mo.) once today but had the schedule altered due to weather, ended a five-game winning streak to fall to 16-10 on the season. Illinois Wesleyan improves to 23-4 overall.
In game one, the Blugolds scored the game's first run in the top of the first. Jenny Hess (Jr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) scored the Blugolds' lone run as Sarah Fern (Jr.-Brooklyn Center, Minn./Park Center) brought her home on a sacrifice bunt.
The Titans scored runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to help in the win. Eau Claire had two hits in the first inning but managed just two more the rest of the game and left 13 runners on bases, including three in the final inning.
Emma Wishau (So.-Waterford, Wis./Union) was given the loss in the circle as she allowed six hits and four runs, only two earned, while striking out four batters. She falls to 6-6 on the season.
In game two with Illinois Wesleyan batting first and scoring three runs in the top of the opening inning, the Blugolds immediately answered in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own.
With two runners on and two outs, Amanda Fischer (Fr.-Wausau, Wis./West) hit a home run to center field to bring in three runs. Emily Muller (Sr.-Lancaster, Wis.) and Fern scored on the homer, both unearned.
Eau Claire took a 4-3 lead with another run by Fischer in the bottom of the fourth after a Nikki Bromelkamp (Sr.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) single to left field.
But the Titans came out in the sixth inning and scored a run to tie the game at 4-4 and followed with another run in the seventh to take a one-run lead. Eau Claire had an opportunity in the seventh after getting a runner on base but the Titans were able to hang on to get the win.
Fischer led the game with three RBI while Bromelkamp had two of the Blugolds' four hits.
Ashley Meinen (Sr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) pitched all seven innings and dropped to 6-3 on the year. She struck out three batters while allowing eight hits and five runs.
While weather could be a factor in Sunday's games, the Blugolds are currently scheduled to face Blackburn (Ill.) at 10 a.m. and Fontbonne (Mo.) at noon at Illinois Wesleyan. Any changes to the schedule will be posted on Blugolds.com as details become available.
