Softball Narrowly Falls, Then Wins Big on Third Day of Spring Break

CLERMONT, Fla. (Blugolds.com) – The 15th-ranked UW-Eau Claire softball team opened the day falling just short 1-0 to third-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University, then closed with a 7-0 win over Williams College (Mass.) on the third day of Spring Break at the NTC Spring Games.

In game one, the Blugolds and Eastern Connecticut each had two hits but one Blugold error was enough for the Warriors to capitalize on as they scored the game's only run in the fifth inning following the error.

Jenny Hess (Jr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) and Sarah Fern (Jr.-Brooklyn Center, Minn./Park Center) both had hits against the Warriors. The Blugolds stranded four runners on bases.

Emma Wishau (So.-Waterford, Wis./Union) took the loss, striking out six batters as she faced 21.

In the second game, Eau Claire started off quickly, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings. The Blugolds had all seven of their runs by the fifth inning.

Hess led the Blugolds with three hits in four at-bats and scored twice. Casey Arnold (Fr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) led the game with two RBI as she brought in two runs in the second inning after hitting her first collegiate homer. As a team, the Blugolds had a season-high 10 hits.

Pitching five innings, Ashley Meinen (Sr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) struck out four batters while allowing four hits to earn the win. She is now 2-0 on the season. Laura Raflik (Fr.-Plover, Wis./Pacelli) finished the game as she pitched the final two innings.

Eau Claire is now 6-2 on the season and will take Wednesday off before playing two more games Thursday.
