LA CROSSE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The sixth-ranked UW-Eau Claire men's outdoor track & field team kicked off the season taking third place out of the seven teams at UW-La Crosse's Ashton May Invitational at Veterans Memorial Stadium today.
UW-Platteville won the meet with 207 points while UW-La Crosse was second with 202 and the Blugolds were third with 162.5.
The Blugolds won four events on the day.
Thurgood Dennis (So.-Allouez, Wis./Green Bay Notre Dame) took the top spot in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.01 seconds.
In the 800-meter run, Matt Cooper (Fr.-Ashwaubenon, Wis.) won with a time of 1:56.48, more than two seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
In the field, Roger Steen (So.-Luck, Wis.) finished the shot put with a toss of 15.50 meters (50-10.25) to take first. The next closest finisher had a distance of 14.53 meters (47-8).
The Blugolds' 4x400-meter relay team of Jacob Dennis-Oehling (Jr.-Whitewater, Wis.), Marty Richardson (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./Kimberly), Cody Prince (So.-Appleton, Wis./North) and Dennis took first with a time of 3:17.20, more the five seconds in front of the rest of the field.
Next Saturday, the Blugolds will compete at the UW-Platteville Invitational, which gets underway at 11 a.m.
