Dan Schwamberger enters his ninth season in 2015-2016 as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s men and women’s cross country head coach. Schwamberger also is an assistant coach for men and women’s track & field.
Women’s Cross Country
In 2009 Schwamberger was named the NCAA Division III Women’s Coach of the Year when he led women’s cross country to become NCAA DIII National Champions, following fifth and eighth place finishes in the two years before. In 2010 the Blugolds finished fourth and took fifth in 2012. In 2014 the Blugolds took 17th at the NCAA DIII National Championships. Nine of his runners have received NCAA All-American Awards between 2007-2012.
Women Blugolds were Midwest Region Champions under Schwamberger in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012, with a second place finish in both 2011 and 2007. Schwamberger picked up three Midwest Region Women’s Coach of the Year in 2009, 2010, and 2012.
UW-Eau Claire Women’s Cross Country took first place as the WIAC Conference Champions every year between 2007-2012. Schwamberger also received WIAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year those six seasons.
Men’s Cross Country
In the past seven years the Men’s Cross Country team has had individual and team qualifiers for NCAA Nationals. Men’s cross country has finished in the Top 10 at Nationals for the past three years (10th in 2012, 9th in 2013, and 7th in 2014). The seventh place finish at Nationals was the best in program archives. In 2012 and 2013 three runners received NCAA All-American Awards.
In 2015 Schwamberger led the squad to its first WIAC title since 1980, earning him WIAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year and a runner receiving WIAC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year. In 2013 and 2012 the Blugolds were WIAC Conference runner-ups.
Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field – Middle/Long Distance
In 2015, Women’s Indoor Track & Field took home a tied fourth place finish at the NCAA DIII National Championships, a huge stepping stone from their 23rd place finish in 2013. He coached 10 NCAA All-American Awards recipients in middle and long distance track events.
In 2015 Blugolds finished third in the WIAC, the best finish since 2012. Under Schwamberger Women’s Track & Field hold nine WIAC Individual Conference Champions.
Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field – Middle/Long Distance
In 2015, Men’s Indoor Track & Field made school history by winning their first ever NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Team National Championship. The Blugolds fought for the top spot the last four years, finishing second in 2014, third in 2013, and second in 2012. Schwamberger coached two Individual NCAA National Champions and 16 NCAA All-American recipients in middle and long distance track events.
In the WIAC, Schwamberger coached six WIAC Individual Conference Champions, breaking 12 school records.
Before coming to UW-Eau Claire Schwamberger was the assistant cross country and track & field coach at UW-Platteville from 2004-2007. He was the graduate assistant at Loras College from 2002-2004 while earning his master’s degree in physical education.
Schwamberger earned his bachelor’s degree in forest management from UW-Stevens Point, where he competed for four seasons in cross country and track. He was a two-time All-American in cross country and five-time track All-American, including a 2000 NCAA DIII Indoor 5K National Champion. Schwamberger is a three-time WIAC Conference Champion (1500, Indoor 5K, Outdoor 5K), 2000 GTE First Team Academic All-American in track, and 1999 WIAC Scholar Athlete Award Winner in cross country.
In October 2012, Schwamberger was inducted into the UW-Stevens Point Athletic Hall of Fame.
Dan Schwamberger is married to Marcie, who works full-time in the Eau Claire School District as a middle school physical education teacher and also coaches cross country and track at UW-Eau Claire.
