Blugold Swimming & Diving Distributes 2012-13 Team Awards
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's and women's swimming & diving teams have announced the team award winners from the 2012-13 season.
Most Valuable Performer honors went to swimmers Alex Card (Jr.-Prior Lake, Minn.) and Lisa Reed (So.-Duluth, Minn./East) along with divers Nick Badilla (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./North) and Amanda Baker (Fr.-Hudson, Wis.).
Card won three WIAC titles this season, the 200-yard individual medley along with the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes. He set school and conference records in both breaststrokes and was named WIAC Swimmer of the Meet for his efforts. At nationals, he earned honorable mention All-American status twice, taking 10th place in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes. It was the second year in a row he received MVP honors while he also won Rookie of the Year recognition in 2011.
Reed won the 1,650-yard freestyle at the WIAC Championship this season. She and her teammates also took second in the 800-yard freestyle relay at conference. A season ago, Reed was named the team's Rookie of the Year.
Badilla competed for the fourth straight season at nationals after finishing as runner-up at the conference championship in both the one and three-meter dives. At nationals this season, he took 18th in the three-meter dive and 20th in the one-meter event. This was the third year in a row he earned Most Valuable Diver honors for the Blugolds.
Baker led the women's team diving all season. She finished in third place at the conference championship in both the one and three-meter events.
Ring swam in six different individual events this season with her primary event being the 100-yard backstroke. Throughout the course of the season in the 100, she improved her time by more than five seconds.
Strom swam in three different individual events at the WIAC Championship and had his best finish in the 500-yard freestyle, taking fifth place. He was named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team at the conclusion of the championship.
Gray swam in six different individual events this season with her primary event being the 100-yard backstroke. She improved her time more than two seconds throughout the course of the season in the event and won three times out of nine times competing.
Stern competed in four different events at the WIAC Championship this season and was part of the runner-up 800-yard freestyle relay team. His top individual result at the championship came in the 1,650-yard freestyle as he took sixth.
Fair swam in seven different events at the WIAC Championship and was also named a WIAC Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete. Her top finishes at conference were runner-up finishes in both the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 100-yard freestyle.
Rose competed in three events at the WIAC Championship and had his best finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, taking 17th place.
AJ Panzer was presented with the Blugold Honor Award.
Selected as team captains for the 2013-14 season were Emily Behrens (Jr.-Faribault, Minn.), Keeley Bensen (Jr.-Maple Grove, Minn.), Card, Abby Meyer (Jr.-Apple Valley, Minn.), Adam Rose, Spencer Rose (Jr.-Brookfield, Wis./Central), and Reed.
This season, both the Blugold men's and women's teams finished in fourth place in the WIAC.
