Men's Hockey Loses After Taking Early Lead
DE PERE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team could not hold on to a second period lead against the No. 5 St. Norbert Green Knights as it lost to the Green Knights 5-4.
The Green Knights got two power play goals in the first period to lead the way. Kyle Stroh got the first one at 1:34 to put the Green Knights up 1-0. Kurt Weston (Jr.-Roseau, Minn./Roseau) tied it up at 13:28 with an unassisted goal. The Knights got their second power play goal at 17:04 to regain the lead 2-1.
The Blugolds went on a second period scoring rampage. They got their first goal of the period at 3:51 by Alex Olson (So.-Devils Lake, ND/Devils Lake) tying the game at 2-2. Ross Andersen (Fr.- River Falls, Wis./River Falls) got another goal at 7:45 to help the Blugolds take the lead 3-2. Devin Mantha (Jr.-Sturgeon Falls, Ont./Ann Arbor Pioneer) would get the last goal of the night for the Blugolds at 14:13 to increase the Blugolds lead to 4-2. With two minutes left in the second period the Green Knights got a shorthanded goal to decrease the Blugold lead to 4-3.
The Green Knights trailed the Blugolds 4-3 going into the third period but they soon evened it up 4-4 at 1:30 when Chris Rial scored a goal.
The third period would remain tied at 4-4 until 18:11 when the Green Knights scored the go ahead goal.
The Green Knights outshot the Blugolds 29-15. Brandon Stephenson (Jr.-Saline, Mich./Saline) got the loss for the Blugolds. He had 24 saves on the night.
The Blugolds (11-8-2) head to UW-River Falls this Thursday to take on the No. 8 Falcons. The puck will drop at 7:05.
