Men's Hockey Comes Up Short to UW-Stevens Point
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team could not capitalize off two goals in the second as it lost to UW-Stevens Point 5-2.
Eau Claire owned the first period outshooting the Pointers 17-12 but it was the Pointers who got on the board first scoring the first goal of the night. Pointer forward Max Bobrow found the open net at 8:50 to put the Pointers up 1-0.
The second period was an exciting one. The Pointers came out scoring their second goal of the night at 5:15. But it was at 8:43 that Brian Nehring (So.- Hopedale, Mass./Milford) brought the Blugolds within one goal that was assisted by Isaiah Bennis (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and Jimmy McCusker (So.- Novi, Mich./Novi). Four minutes later at 12:30, Jordan Singer (Jr.-Lino Lake, Minn./Centennial) found the back of the net on a wide open shot to tie the game up 2-2.
The Pointers came out ready in the third period breaking the tie and scoring on a backhand goal at 1:28. Andrew Kolb scored the fourth goal for Pointers at 13:31 to increase their lead to 4-2. The Pointers finalized its offensive run at 18:51 when they scored their final goal of the night on an empty net goal.
Brandon Stephenson (Jr.-Saline, Mich./Saline) took the loss for the Blugolds. He had 32 saves on the night.
The Blugolds head to St. Norbert tomorrow night to face the No. 14 Green Knights. The puck drops at 7 p.m. in De Pere.
