Men's Hockey Battles to Overtime Tie

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team fought back late in the  third period to give itself a 1-1 non conference overtime tie with St. Olaf College.

The Blugolds outshot the Oles in the first period 21-13, but it was the Oles who found the back of the net first.  Blake Matejcek got the rebound shot in at 6:25 to put the Oles on the board 1-0.

The second period was a tough battle between the two teams.  Both teams had chances to score, but the goaltenders stayed strong in front of the goal.  The two teams were fairly evenly matched for shots as the Blugolds only outshot the Oles 12-10.

The Blugolds were determined in the third period to get a goal, and Jordan Singer (Lino Lake, Minn./Centennial) did just that.  Singer made a beautiful shot that went up and over the glove of the Ole goalie at 15:40 to tie the game up at 1-1.  Helping him out on the goal was Tyler Romasco (Sr.-Perry, Ohio/Perry) and Alex Olson (So.-Devils Lake, ND/Devils Lake).

With the tie at the end of the third, the game went into overtime where neither team was able to get a goal to pull off a win.  The game ended in a 1-1 tie with the Blugolds outshoting the Oles 48-31.

Brandon Stephenson (Jr.-Saline, Mich./Saline) was strong in goal for the Blugolds as he only gave up one goal and had 30 saves.  Ole goaltender Ben Leis had an impressive 47 saves and only gave up one goal.

The Blugolds will be back on the ice next weekend as they head to Superior to take on the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior.  The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
