Men's Hockey Blanks Superior in Regular Season Finale
SUPERIOR, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - One night after shutting out St. Scholastica 3-0, the UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team replicated the score, shutting out UW-Superior 3-0 at Sinto S. Wessman Arena tonight.
With the win, the Blugolds captured the No. 5 seed in the NCHA Playoffs and will be at UW-Stevens Point next Friday and Saturday for quarterfinal action. Both games are set for 7 p.m. If one team wins both Friday and Saturday, it will move on to the semifinals. If the two teams split, a mini-game will take place immediately after Saturday's game to determine the quarterfinal winner. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for students/seniors/youths.
In tonight's shutout, Bryce Wilcox (So.-Rochester, Minn./Century) got the Blugolds on the board first with a power-play goal at 6:34 in the opening period. Andrew McCabe (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and Travis Peckskamp (So.-Sauk Rapids, Minn.) assisted on the eventual game-winner.
While the teams played even in the second period, the Blugolds notched two more goals in the third. The first came from Tyler Romasco (Jr.-Perry, Ohio) at 3:09 while the second came on an empty net from Peckskamp at 18:49.
Brandon Stephenson (So.-Saline, Mich.) picked up the win with 27 saves and has not allowed a goal in his last 132 minutes on the ice. He is now 11-5-1 on the season.
The Blugolds finished outshooting the Yellowjackets 35-27 and were 1-3 on power-play opportunities.
Tonight's shutout was the third this season, the most the Blugolds have achieved since the 2007-08 season when they had four.
Eau Claire is now 14-10-1 on the season and 8-9-1 in NCHA play. Superior finishes the regular season with a 13-11-1 overall record and a 10-8-0 conference mark.
