EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team won its second straight non-conference game with a 5-2 victory over St. Mary's University (Minn.) at Hobbs Ice Center tonight.
The Blugolds, who have won seven out of their last eight games, got things going quickly tonight with Eric OHearn (So.-Traverse City, Mich./Central) scoring at 1:18 in the first period. Ami Peled (Fr.-Encino, Calif./Bloomington Jefferson (MN)) pushed the Blugolds lead to two goals, scoring four minutes later.
In the second period, Eau Claire scored three more times while St. Mary's scored with 1:15 left in the period.
Andrew Wilcox (Jr.-Rochester, Minn./Century), with help from Tyler Romasco (Jr.-Perry, Ohio) and Jordan Singer (So.-Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), scored at 6:27 and the three combined their efforts again less than 10 minutes later to score Eau Claire's fifth goal of the night.
Between the two goals by Wilcox, Jimmy McCusker (Fr.-Novi, Mich./Novi ) scored for Eau Claire at 8:15 in the second period with assists from Ross Janecyk (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) and Tim Possehl (Sr.-Fond du Lac, Wis.).
While the third period was fairly uneventful, St. Mary's scored one more time at 15:32 to close to within three.
Scott Pederson (Jr.-Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) played at 60 minutes between the pipes for Eau Claire and recorded 21 saves, picking up his first win of the season. The Blugolds finished outshooting the Cardinals 40-23.
Eau Claire improves to 10-5 on the season while St. Mary's drops to 3-10.
The Blugolds will be back in NCHA play next weekend with two games at No. 1-ranked St. Norbert College. Action will get underway at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday in De Pere.
