McLain is a Certified Athletic Trainer and member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. He earned an Associate of Science degree with an emphasis in Pre-Medicine from Dixie State University, as well as competing in Cross Country and working with the football team as an athletic training student volunteer at the NCAA Division II school in southern Utah. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Utah after working with the PAC-12 institution's football, women's volleyball and men's basketball teams.
McLain presented "Tarsal Navicular Stress Fracture in a Men's College Basketball Player" at the 2013 Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association's annual Symposium in Denver, CO.
He enjoys running, hiking and playing ultimate frisbee in his spare time. He recalls his favorite athletic training experiences as traveling with the Utah football team to Pullman, WA for a 30-27 overtime win over Washington State, and with the Runnin' Utes to Las Vegas for an upset victory over Cal-Berkeley to advance to the PAC-12 tournament semifinal.
