Kieser finished first out of 308 runners and helped lead the UW-Eau Claire men’s cross country team to a first place finish out of 17 teams at the 2012 Blugold Invitational on Friday at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax. Kieser finished the 8,000-meter course with a time of 24:56, a lifetime personal record, and finished more than 22 seconds in front of the second place finisher.
Golfing for UW-Eau Claire’s second team at the 2012 Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational, Bertram had the best score of any other Blugold as he tied for fifth place with 153 strokes. The second team recorded an 11th place finish while the Blugolds’ first team came in fifth.
Mauer finished first out of 266 runners and helped lead the UW-Eau Claire women’s cross country team to a second place overall finish out of 17 teams, behind Division I University of Minnesota, at the 2012 Blugold Invitational on Friday at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax. Mauer finished the 6,000-meter course in a time of 21:43, a lifetime personal record. She finished more than five seconds ahead of the second place finisher, who was from the University of Minnesota, and more than 10 seconds ahead of the other competitors from Division III.
Engler led the Blugolds to a fourth place finish out of 17 teams at the 2012 Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang Invitational. The top three teams were all NCAA Division II opponents. Engler came in fourth place overall in the 114-golfer field, finishing with 146 strokes.
Behrenbrinker played two complete, overtime games for the Blugolds this week and Eau Claire came away with wins in both. Wednesday against Wheaton College (Ill.), ranked No. 1 in the nation, she stopped three shots and allowed just one goal against a team that had been averaging almost three goals per game this year. The Blugolds won that game 2-1 for their first win over Wheaton in the teams’ 13-game series. It was also Wheaton’s first loss of the season. Saturday facing UW-Stevens Point, Behrenbrinker made seven saves while allowing just two goals as the Blugolds won 3-2 in overtime.
Williams was instrumental in helping the Blugolds win two overtime contests at home this week. Wednesday against No. 1-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) with the Thunder up 1-0, Williams scored the tying goal at 86:09, sending the game into overtime. Then, in the second overtime at 102:33, Williams scored again to lift the Blugolds to the 2-1 victory, their first over Wheaton in the teams’ 13-game series. It was also Wheaton’s first loss of the season. Facing UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, the Blugolds took a 2-0 lead but the Pointers tied the game with two goals in the second half. Just 59 seconds into the first overtime, Williams scored on a penalty kick to give the Blugolds a 3-2 victory. She finished the week with 10 shots, seven of them on-goal.
Gillman and Heltne advanced to the semifinals at the 2012 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships this weekend. The pair won three matches with respective scores of 8-3, 8-3, 8-1 to get to the semifinals but then fell to Coe’s Michelle Schupach and Tai Lucero in the semi match 8-3.
Frassetto finished as the runner-up in the No. 2 singles draw at the 2012 Gustavus Fall Invitational this weekend in St. Peter, Minn. She won three matches with respective scores of 6-3, 6-0, 6-4, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the championship but then came up short 6-4, 6-1 to finish as the runner-up.
In three home conference matches this week, Bomgren and the Blugolds went 1-2, defeating UW-Stout on Wednesday 3-0 while falling in close matches to nationally-ranked UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater 3-2 on Friday and Saturday, respectively. In Saturday’s match against the Warhawks Bomgren led both teams with 25 kills, a career-high, while reaching double figures in kills the other two matches. For the week, she hit .242 with 49 kills and had five service aces, 29 digs and five total blocks.
