2011-12 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 8 (Oct. 17-23)

October 24, 2011
Football - Defense: Kalan Stittleburg, Outside Linebacker, 6-2, 210, Senior, Neillsville, Wis.
Facing UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, Stittleburg finished with four tackles and led the team with one and a half tackles for loss. He had a half of a sack, which came early in the second quarter.

Football - Offense: Matt Olson, Tailback, 5-11, 199, Senior, Stratford, Wis.
Olson scored a touchdown in the first quarter to help the Blugolds to a 14-0 lead against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. His score came with 36 seconds left in the quarter as he ran 16 yards to the end zone. For the game, he finished with 49 yards rushing on 15 carries and caught one pass for 25 yards.

Football - Special Teams: Clint Larsen, Wide Receiver, 6-0, 174, Freshman, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial
Larsen gave the Blugolds a lead in the third quarter against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday as he ran back a punt for a touchdown. He returned the punt 83 yards for the second longest punt return in school history. The longest is 95 yards, which happened in 1953. Larsen finished the day with 94 all-purpose yards as he also return one kickoff for 11 yards.

Men's Cross Country - Joe Martschinke, Sophomore, Waukesha, Wis./West
Martschinke helped the Blugolds to a first place finish with a perfect score of 15 at the Lake Wissota Invitational on Friday. He led the team as he took second place out of 36 runners and came in with a time of 27:04 on the 8,000-meter course.

Women's Cross Country - Alana Jenkins, Sophomore, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial
Jenkins led the Blugolds to a first place finish Friday at the Lake Wissota Invitational. She finished in third place out of 62 runners with a time of 18:51 on the 5,000-meter course.

Soccer - Defense: Alyssa Walker, Defender, 5-7, Senior, Madison, Wis./West
In two games this week, the Blugolds tied UW-La Crosse 0-0 and fell to ninth-ranked Wartburg College (Iowa) 3-1. Walker and the rest of the Blugold defense allowed just 12 UW-La Crosse shots Saturday, only three of which were on-goal, while giving up 16 against Wartburg, only five of which were on-goal. The knights have only come up with fewer than five shots on goal four times this year and average almost nine per game.

Soccer - Offense: Allie Stone, Midfielder, 5-6, Sophomore, Madison, Wis./Verona Area
In two games this week, the Blugolds tied UW-La Crosse 0-0 and fell to ninth-ranked Wartburg College (Iowa) 3-1. Against Wartburg, Stone scored the Blugolds’ lone goal at 27:39. The goal was just the 10th given up by the Knights this season.

Volleyball - Liz Amici, Middle Hitter, 6-1, Senior, Whitewater, Wis.
Playing in 12 sets this week as the Blugolds competed in five matches, Amici led the team with 42 kills and had a hitting percentage of .476 while also leading the team with 18 blocks. Against UW-River Falls on Wednesday in a 3-1 win, Amici had a match and career-high 18 kills. She also led the Blugolds against Lincoln Christian (Ill.) with 12 kills at the Slagell Classic hosted by Millikin University. Competing in three out of four matches at the tournament, the Blugolds came away with four 3-0 victories and pushed their winning streak to eight matches. She was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
