2011-12 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 6 (Oct. 3-9)

October 9, 2011
Football - Defense: Andy Neumann, Inside Linebacker, 6-1, 228, Senior, Germantown, Wis.
Facing UW-Oshkosh this weekend, Neumann finished the game with nine tackles (seven solo, two assists), including two for a loss. He also teamed up with Jimmy Hall for a sack, one of the Blugolds’ six on the day.

Football - Offense: Mike O’Connell, Wide Receiver, 5-10, 168, Junior, Eau Claire, Wis./Regis
O’Connell led the Blugolds with eight receptions this weekend facing UW-Oshkosh. He finished with 77 yards and had a long of 17. He played a critical role on the Blugolds’ final drive of the game, catching five passes as the Blugolds went 65 yards in 13 plays over the final two minutes.

Football - Special Teams: Scott Burzynski, Punter, 5-11, 192, Sophomore, Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd
Burzynski averaged 36.8 yards per punt this weekend against UW-Oshkosh. With four punts, he totaled 147 yards and placed one inside the 20 yard line. He had a long of 42.

Soccer - Defense: Abby Beinlich, Defender, 5-5, Sophomore, Madison, Wis./Memorial
Beinlich was part of a Blugold defense that gave up just two goals in three games this week. The team allowed just 15 shots, only eight on-goal, and finished with a record of 2-1, including a 2-0 conference win over UW-River Falls on Saturday.

Soccer - Offense: Brittany Burant, Defender, 5-11, Senior, Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH
With the Blugolds going 2-1 in three home games this week, Burant helped the team pick up a win Wednesday against St. Thomas (Minn.) as she scored the game-winner. The goal came at 1:04 in the second overtime period and the Blugolds came away with a 1-0 win. She also had three shots in the game and accumulated three more Sunday against Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.).

Women's Tennis - Doubles: Taylor Heltne, Junior, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley & Katie Gillman, Sophomore, Red Wing, Minn.
Heltne and Gillman picked up two conference wins this week at No. 1 doubles defeating their UW-Stevens Point opponents 8-1 Friday while beating their UW-Oshkosh opponents 8-3 Saturday. The pair improved to 4-0 in conference play and has won seven straight matches. For the season, they hold a 13-2 overall record.

Women's Tennis - Singles: Renee Nelson, Freshman, Madison, Wis./La Follette
In two matches this week, Nelson went 2-0 playing at No. 5 singles. Friday, she gave up just one game as she beat her UW-Stevens Point opponent 6-1, 6-0. Against UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, she fell in the first set 6-3, but came back to pick up the match victory 6-1, 10-8.

Volleyball - Emily Neave, Setter, 5-7, Junior, Salem, Wis./Westosha Central
Neave helped the Blugolds to a 3-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday. She finished with 37 of the team’s 40 set assists to lead the match and also had four digs and two kills in two attempts. Neave also finished with a match-high two service aces.
